This process reduces larger seeds to a smaller particle size prior to subsequent rolling and conditioning. Equipment used for the operation basically falls into two categories depending on the material being processed. Swing or fixed hammer grinders are used for hard seeds like palm kernel and copra which require a hammer mill pulverising action.

Breaker rolls can be arranged in vertical pairs with spiral flutes on their faces. The number of rolls and size of corrugations depend on the size of pieces to be broken and the fineness required in the broken material.

Modern breaking roll stands will handle up to 1000 tons per day and operate at a speed of rpm
